So, what exactly is the baud rate and what is its function?

Definition of Baud Rate

Baud Rate (Bd) measures the number of code element symbols transmitted per unit of time. It is a metric used to measure the rate of symbol transmission in a communication system. Each signaling unit that carries data information is called a code element or symbol. Thus, the baud rate is the number of these symbols transmitted per unit of time.

Baud Rate vs. Bit Rate

It's essential to distinguish between baud rate and bit rate:

Baud Rate: The number of symbols transmitted per second. Bit Rate: The number of bits transmitted per second.

The relationship between baud rate and bit rate is defined as:

Bit Rate=Baud Rate×Number of Bits per Symbol Bit Rate=Baud Rate×Number of Bits per Symbol

This means the bit rate is the product of the baud rate and the number of bits carried by each symbol.

Common Baud Rates and Their Applications

Standard baud rates and their applications include:

  • 1200 Bd: Early computers and low-speed modems.
  • 2400 Bd: Low-speed data transfer needs, like printers and early computer terminals.
  • 4800 Bd: Medium-speed data transfer, such as some industrial automation equipment.
  • 9600 Bd: Common standard for most serial communication needs today.
  • 19200 Bd and above: High-speed data transmission requirements.

Not all devices can support high baud rates. When setting the baud rate, ensure both communicating devices support the selected rate for stable and reliable communication.

Importance of Baud Rate in Device Configuration

When configuring industrial networking equipment, setting the correct baud rate is vital for several reasons:

  • Ensuring Communication Match: When connecting a management terminal (e.g., a computer) to a switch using a console cable, both devices must have matching baud rates to establish a stable communication connection.
  • Adjusting Transfer Rate: A higher baud rate increases file transfer speed through the console port, saving time during large data transfers or configuration uploads.
  • Avoiding Data Transfer Errors: Proper baud rate settings prevent data transfer errors due to speed mismatches, which is crucial for accurate configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Terminal Emulation Program Requirements: Terminal emulation programs, like HyperTerminal for Windows, require setting the baud rate to simulate the switch console environment correctly.
  • Device Compatibility: Different devices may support different baud rate ranges. Choosing the right baud rate ensures compatibility between switches and terminal devices.
  • Reducing Interference: In some environments, too high a baud rate can introduce electromagnetic interference. Proper adjustment helps reduce interference and ensure stable communication.

Relationship Between Baud Rate and Code Elements

The baud rate indicates how many code elements (symbols) are transmitted per second. The total number of code elements transmitted over a given time is determined by the baud rate. For instance, in binary modulation, each code element might carry 1 bit of information, while in more advanced modulation techniques, like quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), each code element can carry multiple bits.
